Q: Where do Guemes Island children go to school?
A: They go to school in Anacortes. Anacortes has some of the best schools in the state.
Q: Where do you catch the ferry to go to Guemes Island?
A: The ferry departs from 6th and I Ave.
Q: Does the Island have public water or sewer?
A: Islanders mostly have their own private wells. There are some community wells and there is one community osmosis system on the west side of the island that is managed by Skagit PUD No. 1. There is no sewer system on the island. Everyone has their own septic system.
Q: What is salt water intrusion?
A: There are some wells near the waterfront that have seawater intrusion. Seawater intrusion is the movement of salty water into the fresh water aquifer. By cutting down on water use in these areas one can alleviate the problem.
Q: What does one do if there is an emergency and the ferry is off duty?
A: The ferry can be called for emergencies and an ambulance will come in the middle of the night. There is a heliport on Guemes Island Road. A helicopter can be gotten for serious emergencies.
Q: Are there community events on the island?
A: There are many community events on the island. It seems like every holiday has an event and there are numerous other activites one can participate. There is a book club, a quilting group, potlucks, dances etc.
